The Pros and Cons of Aquamarine Engagement Rings and Promise Rings

Congratulations!  You’ve finally decided to get engaged, and now the most important decision of your life begins – what type of engagement ring to get!  I’m just kidding about it being the most important decision of your life, but it is a big decision, and certainly an expensive decision.  If you’re reading this, you probably have aquamarine engagement rings on your list of ring types to check out.  So with that in mind, here are some pros and cons you will want to consider when deciding if an aquamarine engagement ring  (or promise ring) is in your future.

First the Pros

  • Aquamarine is fairly common, and so that makes it affordable for most people.
  • Aquamarine gems are flawless for the most part.  It is very rare to find even antique aquamarine engagement rings that have flaws in them.  That means even larger stones will still look perfect.
  • Colors of aquamarine gemstones vary from pale blue to very dark bluish green, so you are covered no matter what your preference might be.
  • Because it is a hard gemstone, rating an 8 on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness, it can be cut and faceted into many shapes and sizes, giving buyers the choice of many different styles from which to pick.
  • Aquamarine and diamond engagement rings are fairly common, so if you are also partial to diamonds, it won’t be hard to get the best of both worlds.
  • According to the old traditions, aquamarine engagement rings promise a happy marriage, and are said to bring the woman who wears it joy and wealth into the bargain.

Now the Cons

  • Light blue Topaz, which is less expensive, can often be mistaken for aquamarine gemstones.  If you are unfortunate enough to run across a shady dealer, they may try to pass off a topaz stone as a genuine aquamarine.
  • Aquamarine is hard, as mentioned above, but it may develop internal cracks if it is banged against a hard surface.
  • Aquamarine stones can fade if they are exposed to light for long periods of time.  Keep this in mind if you intend to shop for vintage engagement rings.
  • Aquamarine is the birthstone for March, so though this is not a huge “con”, any piece of jewelry made with aquamarines could be mistaken for simply a birthstone ring, and not the gorgeous aquamarine engagement ring that it really is!
  • Gentle, regular cleaning is a regular chore for aquamarine stones if you want them to shine.  They easily attract skin oils and other dirt, so you will need to clean aquamarine engagement rings often, probably every few days.

There you have it, the pros and cons for aquamarine engagement rings and promise rings.  No one can deny that a ring designed with an aquamarine is breathtaking.  Only you can decide if it will be the perfect type of ring for you.  Take your time to consider all of the points above before you shop, and I know you will end up with the perfect ring.  If you enjoyed reading this, you may also like to read about cubic zirconia rings or rose gold wedding bands.
